Those moments sparked a lifelong love of baking, one he had quietly nurtured in between lesson plans and gym class.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the season, he wasn\u2019t just a fan favorite, he was crowned the winner of <em>The Great British Bake Off <\/em>2023. Today, Matty\u2019s traded the classroom for the kitchen, blending baking, teaching, and a touch of sport to connect with a new generation of home bakers.<\/p>\n<h2>Where It All Began: Nan\u2019s Kitchen and a Teddy Bear Cake<\/h2>\n<p>Matty\u2019s love of baking goes back to one early, joy-filled memory: a chocolate teddy bear cake his Nan made for his birthday when he was about four years old. (@mattyedgell)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I think of my Nan, I think of that cake,\u201d Matty said on an episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/podcast\/107-matty-edgell-great-british-bake-off-winner\/#:~:text=I%20think%20I%20have%20to%20go%20to%20my%20Nan%20on%20where%20it%20all%20started.%20A%20lot%20of%20the%20stories%20I%20know%20about%20my%20Nan%2C%20from%20my%20living%20memory.%20She%20passed%20away%20when%20I%20was%20five.%20There%20are%20pictures%20I%20associate%20a%20memory%20to%2C%20and%20that%20memory%20isn%E2%80%99t%20legit.%20A%20memory%20that%20you%20kind%20of%20made%20up%20almost%2C%20in%20the%20best%20way%20possible.\"><em>The Ultimate Dish<\/em><\/a> podcast. \u201cAlthough she never really saw me in the kitchen, certainly never making much . . . but she\u2019s who I attribute my passion for baking, and probably food as well. It all stems from her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nan, who passed away when Matty was very young, made wedding cakes for friends and family as a hobby, and her creativity left a lasting impression. Years later, baking was something Matty would also do quietly, mostly for birthdays, gatherings, or just to unwind.<\/p>\n<p>That is, until his fianc\u00e9e decided to step in.<\/p>\n<h2>The Bake Off He Never Meant to Join<\/h2>\n<p>Matty\u2019s fianc\u00e9e, Lara, planned to submit an application to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/baking-pastry\/baking-competition-shows-you-should-watch-as-a-pastry-student\/\"><em>The Great British Bake Off<\/em><\/a> on his behalf and without his knowledge. She started by snapping photos of him mid-bake and gradually revealed her plan when it became clear she needed more than just stealthy iPhone shots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said, \u2018No, you\u2019re absolutely not doing that,\u2019\u201d Matty recalled. \u201cAnd she said, \u2018I absolutely am. What have you got to lose?\u2019 And I couldn\u2019t give an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He figured he wouldn\u2019t get past the first round. But then one call led to another, and before long, Matty was in the tent.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery stage of the application, I thought, \u2018This is where it ends,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cAnd then I got through. And then I got through again. And then I got on. And then I\u2019m like, what have I done?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even when filming began, Matty kept things quiet. Only a few staff at his school knew why he needed the occasional Friday off. His students were none the wiser. Week after week, he quietly baked under pressure, and slowly shed the \u201cunderdog\u201d label.<\/p>\n<p>What helped him hold his nerve? Not just the long nights of recipe testing, but years of competitive sports\u2014and a coach\u2019s mindset that treated every setback as a chance to improve.<\/p>\n<h2>From Coach to Cake: How Sports Built His Baking Mindset<\/h2>\n<p>Before piping meringue or layering sponges, Matty was studying sports coaching and physical education at university. After a brief detour in aerospace sales (\u201cnot for me,\u201d he admits), he returned to what felt natural and became a P.E. teacher.<\/p>\n<p>It turns out, many of the qualities that helped him succeed in sports also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/baking-pastry\/every-baker-should-have-these-8-skills\/\">carried over to baking<\/a>: discipline, practice, working under pressure, and learning from feedback. He stayed open, applied feedback quickly, and pushed himself to do better the next round.<\/p>\n<p>One breakthrough moment came during a showstopper challenge requiring a meringue bombe, a delicate, high-risk bake that had only worked once in practice. When the dessert came together during filming, the success gave Matty a much-needed confidence boost.<\/p>\n<h2>Finding His Footing in the Final Bakes<\/h2>\n<p>Week by week, Matty\u2019s technique sharpened and his flavors landed. It all came together during Party Week, the season\u2019s eighth episode, where his sausage rolls earned him a coveted Hollywood handshake and his first Star Baker title.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat handshake\u2014it\u2019s complete validation,\u201d he said, referring to the rare stamp of approval judge Paul Hollywood gives when a bake is truly exceptional. That recognition gave him a boost of momentum heading into the final stretch.<\/p>\n<p>For the show\u2019s finale, Matty got to return to his comfort zone: cake. The challenge was to create a bake inspired by the first cake he ever made. Matty created a colorful, three-tiered cake inspired by a deeply personal connection to his earliest baking memories with his Nan and a more recent culinary experience. The bottom two tiers drew on those formative flavors and techniques learned in his early childhood in the kitchen. The inspiration for his top tier came from an olive oil cake he tasted at a restaurant run by a <em>MasterChef<\/em> winner. He wanted to share the moment with the people who\u2019d made it possible, especially Lara.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou can become quite self-absorbed to be on this,\u201d he said. \u201cFor ten weeks, I didn\u2019t make dinner. For ten weeks, Lara made them. Everyone else picked up my slack massively, most of all Lara. I\u2019ve done the baking; they\u2019ve done everything to facilitate me getting the practice in.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Life After the Tent: Teaching, Baking, and Building a Community<\/h2>\n<p>Although the finale aired in November 2023, the show had actually been filmed months earlier in the spring. So for a time, Matty returned quietly to his P.E. and science classroom, his win still under wraps.<\/p>\n<p>Once the finale was aired and the public learned the outcome, all the excitement and press led to more opportunities for Matty and a momentum that kept pulling him toward something new. Teaching full-time while traveling to London for evening events had become unsustainable, and he was ready to craft a life where his love of baking and teaching could finally merge.<\/p>\n<p>He began by launching the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mattyedgell.com\/baking-academy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Matty Baking Academy<\/a>, designed to help others embrace the joy of baking. On his website and his social media channels, he shares <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mattyedgell.com\/recipes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">free recipes<\/a> like lush Brown Sugar Sponge topped with whipped cream and rich, chewy brownies. Each recipe includes step-by-step instructions, clear photos, and suggested variations, inviting bakers of all levels to jump in. He also judged the event\u2019s cake competition, blending showmanship with education in a way that felt true to his roots.<\/p>\n<p>Since then, you can catch him teaching small-group baking classes, whether online or in person. This autumn (2025), he\u2019ll lead masterclasses at venues like the Season Cookery School in Hampshire, where students can learn to make flaky sausage rolls, silky chocolate tarts, and the impressive Paris-Brest.<\/p>\n<p>Off-screen, Matty continues to bake for others. He now offers bespoke luxury cakes, including custom orders for weddings, events, and team-building sessions.
