{"id":4309,"date":"2015-01-23T16:48:28","date_gmt":"2015-01-23T22:48:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/?p=4309"},"modified":"2021-09-30T11:42:23","modified_gmt":"2021-09-30T16:42:23","slug":"4-cooking-show-surprises-to-be-aware-of","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/boulder-student-life\/4-cooking-show-surprises-to-be-aware-of\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Cooking Show Surprises To Be Aware Of"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By:\u00a0Ryan Hodros, Culinary Arts Student<\/p>\n<p>An interesting thing more or less fell into my lap over the past few weeks\u2014I wound up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/boulder-student-life\/new-perspectives-alex-mccall-aka-frenchie-renard\/\">on television<\/a> (KDVR\u2019s Everyday with Chris Parente and Kathie J).\u00a0 Months back, my classmate Alex McCall (aka <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/boulder-student-life\/new-perspectives-alex-mccall-aka-frenchie-renard\/\">Frenchie Renard<\/a>) had brought me onto her cookbook project \u201cFrenchie\u2019s Soups\u201d, and so when KDVR invited her to come do a cooking segment, they asked that I tag along.<\/p>\n<p>I learned a number of things from the experience, most of which I didn\u2019t see coming at all.\u00a0 Things like\u2026<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Meagan-Instagram.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4310\" src=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Meagan-Instagram.png\" alt=\"Meagan Instagram\" width=\"610\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Meagan-Instagram.png 610w, https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Meagan-Instagram-300x247.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 610px) 100vw, 610px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><strong>4. The Personalities Aren\u2019t Fake<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you grew up watching shows like the Simpsons, you\u2019ve always held this sort of unspoken understanding that the people you see on TV are completely different in real life.\u00a0 Krusty the Klown is really a cynical chain-smoker, Kent Brockman is a rich jerk hated by his co-workers, and \u201cthe Bumblebee Man\u201d is an erudite, classically trained British stage actor.<\/p>\n<p>So when we showed up to the studio, I half expected the hosts to be different from her bubbly, friendly, on-camera personas.\u00a0 I couldn\u2019t have been more wrong!\u00a0 They were the nicest, most interesting people I\u2019ve met in a long time.\u00a0 After the segment was over (and the KDVR staff wasn\u2019t required to interact with us anymore) Kathie J and Meagan Mooney (Chris Parente\u2019s replacement for the day) hung around chatting with us and sharing soup and a brew for almost a half hour.\u00a0 They\u2019re no doubt very busy, but they took the time to get to know us a little bit when they didn&#8217;t really need to, and that was an eye-opener for me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. \u00a0The Studio is TINY<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Call me na\u00efve, but I always assumed shows like Everyday were filmed on big lots with lots of interns running around with coffee for big shots in ties and suits and the whole nine yards.\u00a0 In reality, the studio is set up much like a kitchen&#8211;to maximize space. \u00a0They&#8217;re set up to film several different shows, and the staff is a producer, a technician, and a cameraman.\u00a0 There\u2019s not much else going on.<\/p>\n<p>It makes sense when you think about it\u2014more people means more off-camera noise.\u00a0 It\u2019s just not what I expected, and was a totally alien environment from the hustle and bustle of the kitchen and the classroom.\u00a0 So when you become a celebrity chef and wind up with your own show opposite Giada, don\u2019t be surprised if your set is the size of a closet.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Action-Shot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Action-Shot.jpg\" alt=\"Action Shot\" width=\"763\" height=\"366\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Action-Shot.jpg 763w, https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Action-Shot-300x144.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 763px) 100vw, 763px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><strong>2. \u00a0You\u2019re Not as Nervous As You Anticipate<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Alex and I set up a drinking game with our friends as a joke before our spot aired:\u00a0 Take a drink every time Alex says \u201cy\u2019know\u201d and every time I stutter.\u00a0 This was our way of dealing with the fact that we both <i>knew<\/i> we were going to be exceedingly nervous throughout the filming process.\u00a0 I jokingly told her she was going to have to drive me home because I would have to knock back a few brews in order to be calm enough to say anything remotely understandable.<\/p>\n<p>But the staff at KDVR was so accommodating and so friendly that the nerves just kind of disappeared.\u00a0 I put off watching the segment at home because I was sure I\u2019d be embarrassed, but I honestly did alright despite the fact that public speaking scares me to death.\u00a0 I talk directly into the camera for a few seconds (which is a no-no) and I talk a little too fast, but otherwise I did okay.\u00a0 Alex was a natural\u2014my friends who watched the segment said her voice was so buttery smooth, she should have her own show.\u00a0 Hopefully I\u2019ll get to ride her coattails when that happens.<\/p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Soup-shot.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4312\" src=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Soup-shot.png\" alt=\"Soup shot\" width=\"484\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Soup-shot.png 484w, https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Soup-shot-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 484px) 100vw, 484px\" \/><\/a>\n<p><strong>1. It\u2019s More Fun Than It Looks (and It Looks Pretty Fun)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you imagine Kathie J and Meagan rolling their eyes and sighing in exhaustion as soon as the cameras are off because it\u2019s hard being that upbeat all the time, you are incorrect!\u00a0 The show was such a blast\u2014between joking with the hosts and helping Alex set up her soup demo, and cracking open some brews to share with the cast and crew\u2026I kind of regret not getting into broadcasting when I was in college.<\/p>\n<p>I know this article isn\u2019t really about the food industry or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/\">Auguste Escoffier<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/academics\/culinary-arts\/\">culinary school<\/a> in general, so I hope you\u2019ll forgive me. \u00a0Having grown up in rural Ohio, I like to describe myself as \u201csome kid from the sticks,\u201d so stuff like a local TV spot really jazzes me up.\u00a0 If you get the opportunity to do something like this in the future, jump all over it.\u00a0 Even if it doesn\u2019t boost your career in any way, it\u2019s still an experience you won\u2019t forget.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By:\u00a0Ryan Hodros, Culinary Arts Student An interesting thing more or less fell into my lap over the past few weeks\u2014I&#8230;  <a class=\"excerpt-read-more\" href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/boulder-student-life\/4-cooking-show-surprises-to-be-aware-of\/\" title=\"Read 4 Cooking Show Surprises To Be Aware Of\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":23,"featured_media":4310,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[1297],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4309","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-boulder-student-life"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v26.6 -
