If so, you may have the makings of a nutritionist or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/health-wellness-careers\/how-to-become-a-holistic-nutritionist\/\">holistic nutritionist<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These healthcare practitioners coach their clients towards <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/world-food-drink\/what-is-a-holistic-diet\/\">diet and lifestyle changes<\/a> that may promote better health. Holistic nutritionists may also make recommendations for \u201cwhole body\u201d wellness, like getting better sleep, incorporating more exercise, and reducing stress for a healthier overall lifestyle.<\/p>\n<p>While you may have the dream in mind, you could also be a busy person. You may be raising a family, or you may be working full-time. So how long can it take to achieve your goal of becoming a nutritionist?<\/p>\n<h2>How Long Can It Take to Become a Nutritionist?<\/h2>\n<p>The timeframe for becoming a nutritionist depends both on the individual <em>and<\/em> on the state or country where you plan to practice. In the United States, nutritionists are regulated at the state level, and each state has different requirements regarding education, experience, and certification.<\/p>\n<p>In some states, you can provide dietary counseling without any particular nutritionist education or certification (although it isn\u2019t recommended to offer nutrition services without an education and some experience in the field). In other states, you must be licensed in order to practice.<\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.floridahealth.gov\/licensing-and-regulation\/dietetic-nutrition\/licensing\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the state of Florida<\/a>, nutritionists, dietitians, and nutrition counselors must be licensed.** To earn a license, applicants must complete a bachelor\u2019s degree with a major in human nutrition, dietetics, food and nutrition, or a similar course of study. That usually takes around four years. Then, the applicant needs to complete at least 900 hours of supervised work under a licensed dietitian or nutritionist. If the aspiring nutritionist works in the field full-time, that could take a minimum of six months.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the applicant has to pass the Certified Nutrition Specialist exam by the <a href=\"https:\/\/theana.org\/certify\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Board for Certification of Nutrition Specialists<\/a>, or the Registered Dietitian exam by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdrnet.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission on Dietetic Registration<\/a>. In short\u2014it could take four to five years to get a nutritionist certification in the state of Florida, or more if you attend school and complete your experience requirements part-time.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_20332\" style=\"width: 778px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20332\" class=\"wp-image-20332 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/A-nutrition-coach-writing-and-working-with-a-client-as-they-sit-down-768.jpeg\" alt=\"A nutrition coach writing and working with a client as they sit down\" width=\"768\" height=\"520\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/A-nutrition-coach-writing-and-working-with-a-client-as-they-sit-down-768.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/A-nutrition-coach-writing-and-working-with-a-client-as-they-sit-down-768-300x203.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-20332\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In some states, aspiring nutritionists must work under the supervision of a licensed nutritionist before they can become licensed themselves.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On the other hand, <a href=\"https:\/\/holisticcouncil.org\/nutrition-laws\/arkansas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the state of Arkansas<\/a> does not prohibit providing nutrition care without a license, as long as you\u2019re not calling yourself a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/health-wellness-careers\/dietitian-vs-nutritionist-what-is-the-difference\/\">dietitian<\/a>,\u201d \u201clicensed dietitian\u201d, or \u201cprovisional licensed dietitian.\u201d** Without a requirement for a bachelor\u2019s degree, hundreds of hours of experience, and passing exams, a much shorter timeline could be in the cards for residents and practitioners in the state of Arkansas. Some education programs can be completed in less than two years, allowing graduates to start practicing much more quickly.<\/p>\n<p>To find the rules for your state, visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/theana.org\/advocate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">American Nutritionist Associate website<\/a>.**<\/p>\n<h2>How Long Can It Take to Become a Nutritionist?<\/h2>\n<p>There are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/holistic-nutrition-and-wellness\/\">degrees and diplomas in nutrition and wellness<\/a> offered at many postsecondary levels.<\/p>\n<p>In states that don\u2019t require a bachelor\u2019s degree or higher, students may choose to complete an associate degree or diploma program, like those offered at Auguste Escoffier School of Culinary Arts. These programs usually take less than two years to complete, and they can be taken entirely online with an in-person industry externship.<\/p>\n<p>Students may be asked to do assigned readings, watch videos, and participate in live class sessions. And in the few states that require a master\u2019s degree, it can take around six years to earn (four for undergraduate school and two for the master\u2019s program).<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-article-callout-wrap\">\n<div class=\"blog-article-callout-text\">\n<h3>Nutritionist Certificate vs. Nutritionist Certification<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>A \u201ccertificate\u201d and a \u201ccertification\u201d sound like the same thing, but they\u2019re not! A <strong>certificate<\/strong> usually indicates that you\u2019ve completed a certain program. For example, some schools may offer a certificate to their students when they complete a non-degree granting program.<\/li>\n<li>A <strong>certification<\/strong>, on the other hand, is usually offered by a board-certified licensing body. You won\u2019t be a <em>certified<\/em> nutritionist unless you get a formal credential from a regulated professional organization in your state or country. For example, you could get board certified in holistic nutrition from the <a href=\"https:\/\/nanp.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Association of Nutrition Professionals<\/a> (NANP) in order to call yourself a certified holistic nutritionist. Simply going to school isn\u2019t enough! To find out how to become a certified nutritionist, look for the specific rules in your state and\/or country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h2>Is It Worth the Time and Financial Commitment to Become a Nutritionist?<\/h2>\n<p>This is a question each individual must answer for themselves. But here is some helpful information that may help you decide.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The job outlook for nutritionists and dietitians is good, with the industry expected to grow by about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/dietitians-and-nutritionists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7% between 2021 and 2031<\/a>. That growth tracks with the rest of the overall job market growth in the United States.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/healthcare\/dietitians-and-nutritionists.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">median pay for nutritionists in 2021<\/a> was $61,650. While no one can anticipate how much any individual nutritionist will earn, it is on average a well-paying field.*<\/li>\n<li>According to information gathered by U.S. News, <a href=\"https:\/\/money.usnews.com\/careers\/best-jobs\/dietitian-and-nutritionist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working as a dietitian or nutritionist<\/a> is #76 on their list of the 100 Best Jobs, and #21 in Best Health Care Jobs.
