So if you\u2019d like to start your journey to better health\u2014or help others to do so\u2014take a moment to explore a holistic diet.<\/p>\n<h2>What Is a Holistic Diet?<\/h2>\n<p>It would be nice if everyone agreed on the definition of a holistic diet, but this just isn\u2019t the case. Some people use the term to refer to a diet that prioritizes whole and unprocessed foods like fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, unprocessed meats, eggs, and nuts. In other words, \u201cwhole foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, rather than the types of foods themselves, some professionals\u2013like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/health-wellness-careers\/how-to-become-a-holistic-nutritionist\/\">holistic nutritionists<\/a>\u2013use the term \u201cholistic diet\u201d to refer to a way of eating that benefits the whole body. This is the definition we\u2019re going to focus on.<\/p>\n<h2>What Does a Holistic Diet Prioritize?<\/h2>\n<h3>1. Nutrients<\/h3>\n<p>The term <em>holistic<\/em> can hold multiple interpretations practically, and many facets are rooted in evidence-based research.<\/p>\n<p>A holistic diet looks at an individual\u2019s specific nutritional needs. This includes the macronutrients\u2014carbohydrates, fats, and protein\u2014as well as micronutrients like vitamin C, iron, and zinc. Of course, not everyone needs the same amounts of these nutrients, so this diet focuses on your specific needs <em>and<\/em> how they relate to other components of a holistic diet.<\/p>\n<p>This may involve selecting specific foods to consume or adding natural supplements to one\u2019s diet. Where Food Comes From<\/h3>\n<p>In today\u2019s world, it\u2019s easy to passively eat a meal without ever thinking about where your food comes from. But a holistic diet aims to change that.<\/p>\n<p>Not only do holistic diets encourage eaters to learn the differences between labels like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/world-food-drink\/the-difference-between-non-gmo-and-organic-farming\/\">organic, non-GMO<\/a>, and carbon-neutral, but they also push consumers to develop a sincere connection to their food producers.<\/p>\n<p>By identifying where your food comes from, as well as connecting with farmers to explore how food is grown and maybe even growing some of your own food, you may develop a greater appreciation for your food and its ability to power your body. This appreciation and awareness has the potential to improve people\u2019s relationship with their food.<\/p>\n<h3>3. Associations with Food<\/h3>\n<p>One of the best things about food is its ability to connect us to other people, memories, and our unique life stories. Cozy up with a bowl of dal and perfectly cooked rice, and you may be transported to afternoons spent in your grandmother&#8217;s kitchen. Or maybe eating a juicy tomato ripe from the summer sun brings back memories of the first year you grew a garden.<\/p>\n<p>Steer yourself toward foods that invoke positive memories from the past. Relationship with Food<\/h3>\n<p>With diet ads reaching out from seemingly every direction, it can be difficult to have a healthy relationship with food.<\/p>\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/podcast\/36-amy-sapola-holistic-nutrition-wellness\/\">Dr. Amy Sapola<\/a> says about the messages we get from diet culture: \u201cIt\u2019s good for you. It\u2019s bad for you. I\u2019m a good person. I\u2019m a bad person because of what I eat.\u201d Instead, a holistic diet can help individuals connect with their bodies and make peace with food. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of power in being able to listen to yourself,\u201d* says Sapola.<\/p>\n<p>A holistic diet may focus on stopping and asking yourself what your body really wants and needs, so you can provide it with what it\u2019s calling for. By making a conscious effort to listen to your cravings at any given time, you can mindfully enjoy food choices \u2013 even if it is a salty, crunchy snack. This allows one to relish in eating a healthy quantity without bingeing.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, a holistic diet may implement some parts of intuitive eating, such as eating when you\u2019re hungry and stopping when you\u2019re full. While this may sound like common sense, it goes against the advice of many modern diets which are more about rigidity and predetermined portions of food.<\/p>\n<h3>5. How Life Impacts Diet<\/h3>\n<p>Holistic wellness recognizes that many different components impact one\u2019s health, and these segments often impact each other! With that in mind, holistic nutritionists realize that other areas of holistic health can influence the food that individuals choose to eat.<\/p>\n<p>For example, if someone is struggling to get to bed at a decent hour, they may find themself reaching for salty snacks throughout the night.
