That\u2019s closer. But it\u2019s still just a tiny fraction of what students explore in a quality culinary program.<\/p>\n<p>So\u2026what <em>can<\/em> you learn in culinary school?<\/p>\n<p>No one can say what <strong>you specifically<\/strong> will learn in culinary school. What if you miss a day? What if you struggle with a certain lesson or skill? What if you learn something\u2026and then forget it? After all, most people can\u2019t tell you what sine, cosine, and tangent are, even though they were surely covered in middle or high school math.<\/p>\n<p>What <em>you<\/em> learn comes down to many different factors. So perhaps a better question is, \u201cWhat can culinary school teach?\u201d Different culinary schools and programs will have unique courses and goals for their students. Students can attend live sessions and watch demonstration videos, in lieu of sitting in classes in person, before completing assignments and practicing techniques in their home kitchens.<\/p>\n<h3>Food Safety &amp; Sanitation<\/h3>\n<p>While it\u2019s tempting to jump right into cooking, there is a topic that <em>almost<\/em> always comes first in culinary training\u2014food safety. Cooks and chefs have a responsibility to prevent cross-contamination or spoilage that can lead to illness or food poisoning. Proper hygiene, food handling, food storage, and cleaning standards must be practiced diligently to keep cooks and their customers safe.<\/p>\n<h3>Knife Skills<\/h3>\n<p>Be prepared to cut lots of veggies! Each term refers to a specific type of cut, and a skillful cook knows them all.<\/p>\n<h3>The Fundamentals of Baking &amp; Charcuterie<\/h3>\n<p>Culinary arts students may not aspire to become bakers, but they should still know the baking basics. An introduction to bakeshop staples like quick breads (muffins, pancakes, biscuits) and straight dough (flatbread and French bread) plus patisserie helps them to understand what happens in the oven. They deep-cleaned the kitchen up to eight times per day!<\/p>\n<p>In school, students practice \u201cworking clean,\u201d keeping their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.escoffier.edu\/blog\/culinary-arts\/what-is-mise-en-place-and-why-is-it-so-important-to-chefs\/\"><em>mise en place<\/em><\/a> tidy and their workstations free from dirty dishes and food scraps.
